When a Death Occurs

When a death occurs, it can be a very confusing time for loved ones. St Peter Street Funeral Services in Blackburn, Lancashire offer professional services and caring guidance in a time of great stress and grief. We take care of all the funeral arrangement in such a difficult time.

At Home

When a death occurs at home and the death was expected, you should ring the Doctor, who will arrive to certify the death. Once the doctor has attended please contact us on – and we will attend as quickly as possible. The deceased can then be moved to our chapel of rest at 17 St Peter Street, Blackburn whilst the arrangements are finalised.

If the death was unexpected then it is normal for the Coroner to be involved. If necessary the deceased may be moved to the local hospital mortuary whilst further discussions take place. The doctor and coroner team will decided if a Post Mortem examination is required. When satisfied the coroner will grant permission for a cause of death certificate to be issued and either a cremation certificate or Burial Order for the Funeral Director.

At a Hospital or Nursing Home

If the death occurs in a hospital or nursing, the doctor will attend, certify the death and issue a Cause of Death Certificate. If a cremation is planned, let the medical staff know as additional forms are required to be completed by the Doctor.

Registering the Death

All deaths must be registered at a Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages by a relative of the deceased, anyone present at the death or the deceased’s executors. You need to take the Cause of Death Certificate and also if available the deceased’s medical card. The registrar will issue a certificate for burial/cremation (green in colour), this is required by the Funeral Director to enable the Funeral to take place.

In addition the registrar will issue a white form to send to the Social Security Office (DWP). The registrar will issue copies of the death certificate for a small fee, these are necessary for sorting out the estate of the deceased.
